Dragonflies are a beautiful symbol of transformation and their story aligns beautifully with both the vision and transformation services provided at the Flying Pangolin Wellness Studio.
How do the dragonflies know when to emerge from their watery kingdom into the realm of air and sun? What tells them the time has finally come?
Dragonflies are ancient creatures, inhabiting our earth for over 300 million years. Beginning life as eggs in the water, they eventually transform into nymphs. The nymphs exist in their underwater kingdom between 2 and 7 years, depending on the species. But magically, once they are called forth to make their final transformation, the courageous nymph crawls out of the water, the only home it has ever known, and begins to swallow air (breath work), until finally the adult dragonfly breaks free, never to exist under the water again. The newly transformed dragonfly soon realizes how its world has transformed: no longer an underwater swimmer, but instead an expert flier that can hover in mid-air, changing direction quickly, and gracefully gliding through the air in any direction, including backwards!
How do the dragonflies know when to emerge from their watery kingdom into the realm of air and sun? What tells them the time has finally come? And how do we know that it is our time to use breath to journey inward, so that we may realize what we have always been?Surely it is because we are all connected to the same intelligence; humans, animals, plants, and earth. We all march to the rhythm of the Universe and eventually wake to the small whisper within, our knowing, our soul. We all feel called to change at various points in life, and this often takes great courage.
Not so many years ago, three dragonflies accompanied me and my two rescue dogs on a daily walk, flying just above my head, staying with us as we made our way around the neighborhood. I was both amazed and entertained knowing this is the Universe talking, nudging me to let go of fear and make some BIG LIFE changes I had been sitting on for years. This visit happened three days in a row - I was filled with joy and wonder to greet this dragonfly trio again on days two and three. This happened during a period of intense personal transformation that included moving countries, homes, and finding the courage to face my own physical, emotional and spiritual healing. There was forgiving and being forgiven. There was also the loss of an immediate family member and a lot of grief. There was letting go of fear and taking some pretty enormous leaps, surrendering to growing my dragonfly wings on the way down.
It is quite similar to the transformation of the nymph to the dragonfly, through all the pain, effort and change, good things were happening, and on the other side there was the unearthing and re-birthing of my authentic self.
We all have wings - we simply need to pause and breathe to find them. And as the Dragonfly tells us, once you have your wings, the sky is the limit!
When we let go of fear and lean into the stillness and just breathe, we realize our nature and find true freedom in knowing that nothing lasts forever, that everything is change. And when we are able to accept this truth we find the courage to live in each moment. It is this courage that allows us to listen to that voice within that tells us so certainly, "it is time to venture forth into the unknown, to become what you’ve always been.
"Just like the wisdom and courage of the amazing dragonfly, each of us holds the wisdom to our own healing and perfect well-being. Our breath provides a path home that allows us to let go of fear, go deep, rise up, and become the very best versions of who we are. Ready for you own transformation?
